About 7/11 Barcrawl
The 7/11 Barcrawl is a travelogue comic by Erin Taylor, detailing a trip to Japan in winter 2018. It's an exploration of travel, cross cultural communication, and Japanese bar and travel culture. It is Japanese culture and traditions through the eyes of two Americans: Erin and Moira. Erin studied abroad in Japan in high school, and has been studying Japanese since she was eleven, but this trip is Moira's first time in Japan -- she's seeing it through fresh eyes. The girls stay in a hotel in the Asakusabashi neighborhood and introduce readers to a ton of favorite Tokyo neighborhoods, as well as travel recommendations and staples of Japanese food and culture.
Q: Where in Tokyo did you stay?
A: We stayed at the Anne Hostel in Asakusabashi -- amazing staff and a great location!
Q: What are the best hidden gems in Toyko?
A: You'll have to read the comic to find that out, but I can give a few quick recommendations! I loved Tokyo Tower -- it's gorgeous and there is a really tasty crepe ship at the base! It''s less popular than Tokyo Sky Tree, but I personally enjoyed it much more. Go record shopping in Tokyo if you like vinyl -- Japanese records are insanely high quality and there are a lot of western artists. Thrifting in Japan is amazing -- I recommend the Hard Off line of stores. if you like anime, "Hobby Off" is a must. Tampopo House near Ameyoko is a fantastic thrifty, in my opinion. TONS of great Japanese fashion, and most is under a dollar. I bought the best jeans of my life here. I think about going back all the time. Shimokitazawa is truly phenomenal if you like vintage, but expect to have to dig for Japanese vintage -- a lot of it is imported Americana. It's worth it for a good day of digging and window shopping, though, and you'll find some treasures! I also think bathhouses are a must. We went to this one in Asakusa and I thought it was the perfect Japanese bathhouse experience.
Q: Where can we find you? How often do you update?
A: The 7/11 Barcrawl updates every other week -- follow me on Twitter or Instagram for updates! You can also read my other comic, Kanpiki, to hear the story of my experience studying abroad in Japan in high school!
